A delicate rod for fishing small streams and creeks. Medium action built for precision casting at short distances.
A nice, all-purpose rod designed for casting dry flies in medium streams. Deadly accurate at short distances, it's slow action makes this rod perfect for chasing small to medium sized trout.
A versatile medium action trout rod with a little more mass in the butt section. This beefed up design helps with longer casts and can handle small streamers but is still delcate enough to lightly present dry flies.
"Steve I absolutely love this 4wt!!!
I picked this build specifically for small brushy streams and it
absolutely crushed all of my expectations! Every time I cast it into a
tight pocket with overhanging cover I'm blown away
with the accuracy and delicacy at which it delivers.
Very well done sir, thank you!!!"

"SG - Boys are in the house and I was able to sneak out with both
4wts. Using dry flies I caught a bunch of greens and two of them being
heafty. Super fun.
I truly am surprised how much line I can carry in a cast and how accurate
they are. Great rods! Hats off to you sir!"

"I received a 3 wt and 5 wt rod that Scissortail Rod Company builder Steve Griffin
built for me. Yesterday I had a chance to get on the River with the 3 wt. I ordered
these back in 2023 and knew it would be a while before I received them. It was well
worth the wait. Steve Griffin is a consummate master craftsman.
I couldn’t believe how well balanced the rods are. It was a bit windy on the river
yesterday and despite that I love the way these rods cast. Took a bit to get the timing down after using
graphite abs carbon fiber rods for so long. Well the graphite and carbon fiber rods are now
my back up rods. I do not think I will ever use them again or at the very least not very often.
Once I got the timing down and figured out to let the rod load up and really
take my time casting these rods became a dream. Sadly, I didn’t get a bite at all,
didn’t even see a fish. I did land a stick though that I accidentally hooked and the
rod handled that admirably 😂. Watching line as I set up each cast was like watching
a tutorial on fly casting. It took no real effort on my part just slowing down the
mechanics of casting and letting the rod do the work. Doing that alone really
helped my accuracy on putting a fly right where I wanted it to get excellent drifts.
The rod also roll casts amazingly. Not only are these rods a work of art and perfection
in my eyes, but fished them for 5 hours up and down the river, and my arm never once got
tired or sore. These rods will eventually become and heirloom and be passed down
to my son and/or grandson. My only regret is after almost 50 years of fly fishing
on and off, that I didn’t purchase a custom bamboo handcrafted rod until now.
So, if you’re considering or thinking about purchasing a bamboo rod from Scissortail Rod
Company, I suggest you do it before he raises his prices to a point where they
should be selling. In my mind I got the deal of a lifetime, but not only did I
get a deal, but acquired a very good friend in this process too.
There is absolutely a difference by a wide margin between a Scissortail Bamboo fly rod
and a commercial fly rod. Honestly, I have told Steve his prices are to low right
now for the quality and craftsmanship he puts into these rods!

Orders may be placed by email. I build all rods on a first-come-first-served basis. So, once your order is submitted, you will be placed at the end of the queue and I will update you as my workload progresses. Wait times depend on the size of the backlog at the time of the order.
Once I am ready to begin building your rod, I will reach out and we will finalize the details of the order (hardware selection, wrap colors, grip style, etc.). After these details have been finalized, you will be billed for half the cost of the rod as a non-refundable deposit. This initial deposit is required prior to the build beginning. An additional deposit may be required on special requests and will be determined at the time of the order. Once I receive your deposit, I will begin work on your rod.
Throughout the process, I will keep you updated on the status of the build as well as any potential delays. Once the rod is complete, I will send you a final invoice with the remaining balance due along with any associated taxes and shipping charges, which must be paid in full before the rod is shipped. The buyer is responsible for the full shipping cost of which I can provide an estimate upon an order being placed.
